Small traders in Karnataka, including bakeries and tea shops, have threatened a statewide shutdown on July 25th. This protest is against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) demand notices issued by the Commercial Tax Department to businesses with an annual UPI turnover exceeding 40 lakh rupees. Over 11,000 notices have been issued, affecting various small businesses like street vendors and condiment shops. The traders’ association has set a deadline for the withdrawal of these notices, stating that if the demand is not met, around 65,000 establishments will close in protest. A key point of contention for the traders is how their UPI transaction data was shared with the tax department. The Commercial Tax Department maintains that issuing the notices is lawful and ensures fairness to regular taxpayers.
